étude de marché secteur énergie

Market research: energy

Since the 2020-2022 energy crisis, the energy sector has been the subject of numerous market studies. These may focus on the energy sources themselves (electricity, gas), their means of production (photovoltaic panels), as well as consumption and distribution methods. In this sector, IntoTheMinds can pride itself on having handled all possible use cases (see project examples at the bottom of this page). Whatever your project, we guarantee a tailor-made solution.

Use cases for market research in the energy sector

The studies we have conducted in the energy market include several types:

  • Exploratory studies on a country’s legislation prior to geographical expansion
  • Studies of sales potential in a specific geographical area (surveying commercial targets using the CAWI method)
  • Brand awareness studies for well-established brands (see the Primagaz example below)
  • Pricing studies (see notably the 2 studies we conducted for the Energy Regulator and the Ministry of Economy at the bottom of the page)

Whatever your project, rest assured that we will provide an appropriate solution. We can apply quantitative methods for your customer satisfaction surveys, pre-launch studies for new offers or brand awareness studies. For more exploratory topics, we also apply qualitative approaches.

Key considerations

Studies in the energy market require some precautions, especially during sampling.

For the gas market, for example, one must consider the availability of town gas before selecting respondents (see our projects with Primagaz below).

For electricity market studies, several parameters must be taken into account to assess consumer behavior in general and demand in particular:

  • financial incentives (e.g., subsidies and grants for renewable energy)
  • competition and pricing
  • energy mix available to the respondent

Most analyses are conducted using a quantitative approach. Rarely are they based on qualitative methods, as such use cases are uncommon. The example of Hub.Brussels (see below) falls into this category.

Budget

The budget will necessarily depend on the nature of the requested study.

When a quantitative CAWI approach is possible (e.g., in the case of awareness studies), budgets start at €7500. For market studies using secondary data, the budgets will be lower.

Examples of market research in the energy sector

Primagaz entrusted us with the execution of its brand awareness study in Belgium for all its products (gas bottles and tanks). This quantitative study (CAWI) is highly technical as it requires us to target households that are not connected to the natural gas grid. Targeting must be carried out in advance, by locality and sometimes even by street, to ensure that only suitable respondents are surveyed.
The Belgian energy regulator entrusted us with the task of developing a methodology to measure the compensatory value in the event of load shedding. In situations where energy supply is lower than demand, the law allows for certain users to be disconnected from the grid. Our mission was therefore to develop the methodology as part of this European pilot project and to test it on a representative sample of the Belgian population (B2C) as well as businesses (B2B). For more information, you can consult the report published by the CREG.
Following our study for the CREG (see above), the Belgian Ministry of the Economy asked us—amidst the energy crisis—to repeat the measurement across the entire population. The context was a potential imbalance between supply and demand due to the shutdown of two nuclear power plants. It was therefore urgent to understand the possible financial consequences of load shedding.
This project was part of the client's expansion (installer of photovoltaic panels and heat pumps) into the German market. The objective was to study the applicable regulations to help the client best prepare for the project.
Hub.Brussels is the official public agency supporting entrepreneurship in the Brussels Region. We were commissioned to carry out a qualitative study on the impact of the energy crisis on SMEs and microenterprises in the region. The study went beyond economic impacts, as we also sought to understand the psychological effects of the energy crisis on entrepreneurs. The project naturally led to the use of a qualitative methodology.
