An experiment called Uberize.me was started by Christophe Charlot (journalist at Trends / Tendances) in April 2015. His goal is simple : make 2500€ in one month only with so-called mini-jobs (Chef at Menu Next Door, driver at Deliveroo / Take It Easy, …).
Christophe is filming his experiences and posts short-format videos on his youtube channel. If you understand French the videos are pretty fun to watch; you’ll discover that being an amateur is not so easy as it may sounds.
Here are a few facts that I found interesting to report :
- 80% of Menu Next Door chefs cook only once.
- On average a Menu Next Door chef sells 25 menus.
- Christophe made 138€ profits for an estimated 15 hours of work (9.2€/hour on average)
Conclusion
Last year we published a lot on the uberization of the job market. We turned from very enthusiastic to more concerned about the reality of those jobs. The Menu Next Door experience of Christophe Charlot shows that making good money is a hard task. You must earn a reputation (which is also a challenge in itself as we explained in this post) and keep it. This dark side of the job probably explains why 80% of the amateur chefs don’t keep cooking for Menu Next Door.
