Next to the guest blogging offers I receive every single day, I also receive offers from agencies which want me to pay them for writing on my behalf. Such a company (called Ridigio) got in touch with me a few months ago to propose its services. I had an interesting discussion with their salesrep and realized how much my blog was worth : some 221,000€.
How I got to this total is simple : their most basic offer starts at 85€ per article. Over the course of 8 years I’ve written more than 2600 articles : 2600 x 85€ = 221,000€.  I started in French only, then added English 5 years ago and Dutch 3 years ago (to read a review of the latest blog performances, click here).

My reflection after all those years is simple : it’s not AT ALL about the money I saved by writing everything myself. It’s about everything I learned through the writing exercise. Money has never my motivation. Sharing knowledge with others, being read were the two only motivations and my biggest reward is to see the audience of the blog growing despite its niche positioning.

I’m not saying that I wouldn’t have opted for having articles written on my behalf if they had cost 10€ the piece.

Over my last 8 years of blogging I was able to develop my style as well as some writing habits. Here are my pieces of advice for those who want to launch their blog :

 

Be authentic

Don’t always try to be smooth. After all your opinions make entire part of your professionalism

 

Scratch the surface of things

Most articles I read online are so uninteresting. Actually 95% of what I read is just crap. Good articles are rare and have in common that they go beyond the surface and propose new perspectives.

 

Read, Learn, Write

This is my greatest and most successful writing habit. When I read something interesting I immediately start processing that information, make parallels and write. Look at my Walmart article for instance (published last week). I was stunned by Walmart’s business idea and I immediately made a parallel with a concept by Amazon, DHL and Audi that I wrote about a few years ago. This is the kind of analysis that you’ll rarely read online.

 

Enjoy

this is maybe the most important factor of all. You should enjoy writing and putting your thoughts on paper. If writing means you get headaches I bet you’ll never be able to get anywhere with your blog.
