Banks have usually been one of the last steps in the firm creation process. It’s where you have to go to get money when you’ve done your homework and proved, on the paper, that your business idea is worth to exploit.

The marketing campaign launched by KBC on February 1st  aims at re-thinking the role of banks. It’s is called “La lacune sur le marché” which one could translate by “the gap on the market”. One could say KBC tries to re-engineer the process and start with the bank rather than ending with it.

Identifying opportunities

Many people want to become entrepreneurs, have their own company and make a living out of it. Yet, very few actually do so. The risks are of course importance, failure is stigmatized, but more often than not business ideas are missing. What KBC wants to do here is to create a map of possible opportunities in the Brussels, Flemish and German-speaking regions of Belgium. Customers are asked to identify unsatisfied needs and to locate them on a map of the Brussels region.

Advice for your business plan

Kudos to KBC. We usually see banks as a hurdle in the entrepreneurial process but this time someone seems to think differently and wants to re-invent the process.

Yet, don’t forget that the catchment area very much depends on the business and you don’t necessarily need too a large number of the same store in a given city.
