I was in a meeting with Fedex a few weeks ago at the Cologne Hub and it seems that the business is getting better (at least in the US° for them. Memphis employees have indeed received a bonus this year, the first in 4 years, whoch is a sign that things are not going that bad.
Actually when you think about it, the express transport industry might undergo a new consolidation phase. On the one hand DHL is not doing well, it left the US in 2008 but remains the leader in Europe. On the other hand Fedex has plenty of cash, just opened a new state-of-the-art hub at the Cologne airport and wants to reinforce its position in Europe. Wouldn’t it make sense to seek synergies … you already know what I mean, don’t you? Look at the big picture: DHL + Fedex = a solid competitor on all continents against UPS. Of course the European Commission would need to authorize the merger but since DHL is part of Deutsche Post, if the latter accept to sell only DHL to Fedex it might work.
Wait and see …
