Question 1

The studies showed that nostalgia helped people feel mentally belonging to the past. They probably felt “included” to some extent, but it is unclear whether they felt totally included in society again. Further, it is also unclear how long the effect lasts. I do belief that nostalgia plays a strong role in defending oneself against loneliness, but it is definitely not the sole factor. Further, it would be interesting to examining the nostalgia-quality link. That is actually a very interesting idea. It could be that nostalgia actually reflects quality. I can’t answer on that as I haven’t explored that link but I would not be surprised if nostalgia might lead to higher perceived quality. Great idea!

Question 2

Well, the US is a strongly individualistic country, and thus our effects have occurred in such a setting. It would be interesting to test the idea in an interdependent culture, such as Japan. You would expect the effect to be weaker, as loneliness might be a weaker problem in the Japan than over here. On the other hand, our studies found that activating the interdependent self made the effects stronger. If people’s interdependent self is activated, they have an even stronger need for belongingness.

Question 3

Brands should evaluate the risk for sure. Above everything, the quality of the product should stand out, and should not harm people’s idea about the past. If a company totally skrews up the picture that people had about the brand in the past, it will fail. People like high quality brands, and the nostalgic brand should be a cleanly updated modern version of the past image of the brand, but keeping the real character of the brand.

Question 4

That’s hard to say. I think loneliness is a pervasive and growing problem in modern societies. However, I would play the loneliness role, being a company. Our research showed that a preference for nostalgic brands also occurs when the interdependent self is activated. This means that stressing social bonds might be enough to create an interest in nostalgic products. I think that’s a safer path to follow.
